The Berner Kantonalbank e-safe
Since 2021, Berner Kantonalbank (BEKB) has been providing its customers with e-safes and digital mailboxes based on DSwiss technology.
The Challenge
Online banking is now common practice across all age groups. As a universal bank, BEKB appeals to a wide range of customer groups, from children to senior citizens, from digitally inexperienced customers to digital natives. Their expectations of online banking are shaped by their experience with the digital offerings of tech giants such as Google and Facebook, or the intuitive operation of Apple products. Customers want ‘simple’ e-banking without a lot of ‘bells and whistles’. They expect interactions that previously required a trip to the bank counter to be digitally mapped and bank documents such as account statements or tax documents to be accessible in electronic form. At the same time, the increasing digitalisation of all business processes is driving up the need for a secure storage location for important data such as digital documents or passwords.

The Solution
DSwiss developed the e-safe and digital mailbox as modules for BEKB, which were integrated into the existing BEKB customer portal. The modules can be accessed via the web browser of the BEKB customer portal.
Saving Paper and Costs with the Digital Mailbox
The digital mailboxes enable BEKB to send hundreds of thousands of files to its customers with end-to-end encryption in no time at all.
This makes it easier for customers to handle their bank documents. In addition to private customers, BEKB's corporate customers in particular benefit from this. Extensive filter options help them search for specific documents. These are now stored in the digital mailboxes for ten years. This means that BEKB's digital mailbox complies with the legal retention periods for business documents and eliminates the need for paper printouts for physical archiving.
The Impact
Thanks to digital mailboxes, BEKB has restructured its document delivery system and, in particular, simplified the process for sending information. Customers can still choose to receive customer letters by traditional post if they wish. However, most new customers opt for the default setting of receiving customer mail digitally only.
The e-safe is enjoying slow but steady growth in its user base. Although no specific communication measures have been taken to date, the e-safe has been able to win over users who are comfortable with online technology.
